About RuStyx

As RuStyx, I am a one-man band operating from the Scottish Borders, just a little south of Edinburgh. This website is an engineering manager exploring ways to share his knowledge and experience and to help businesses achieve their potential.

I have worked in the electronics industry for over 40 years in a wide variety of both engineering and management roles – design engineer, project manager, chief engineer, quality manager and manufacturing manager. Over the years, working mostly in smaller organisations, I’ve had to become involved in most things and always enjoyed the challenges.

Like so many other engineers that move into management, I’m amazed at the lack of management training that we often receive. I have perhaps been lucky in that my career developed within a prosperous company that invested in their staff development. Continual professional development, in one form or another, is what keeps us from stagnating.

I’m keenly interested in the basic processes of management – what makes an effective manager? – how should management fit in with product development or project management? – and how can good management improve organisational performance? I’m generalising quite a bit here, but I find that many engineering businesses are great at engineering but really suffer through lack of management.

At the moment, I don’t know how this website is going to evolve but it’s certainly going to be another challenge. I’d love to hear from companies who recognise the issues within management that this website explores.
